Latin

Why Latin?

One of the best decisions a person can make is choose to study of Latin.

A few reasons why Latin is beneficial to you, your learning process, your English vocabulary and your ability to think more logically and coherently:

1. Over half of English vocabulary is made up of Latin words and roots:

  • Approximately 80 percent of the vocabulary items in English dictionaries are directly or indirectly borrowed from Latin.
  • Most of the English words in science and technology are Latin.
  • Indirect borrowing from later languages like French are also fundamentally Latin since it’s the mother language of all 5 Romance languages: French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian.

2. Latin is a core subject:

  • Latin is to the study and understanding of language what math is to the sciences.
  • The study of Latin fortifies one’s mental discipline and provides the necessary structure for not only linguistic learning but for any kind of learning.
  • Latin helps the learner perfect the art of systematizing knowledge and what the process of learning anything is: in sum, Latin teaches one how to think about knowledge and how to learn.

3. Latin effectively trains the mind how to decode and process information:

  • The person who studies Latin is an overall superior learner of any subject matter as Latin teaches one to think and logically organize one’s thoughts.
  • Latin helps one think systematically and logically approach any new subject matter or idea.
  • Effective study of Latin instills in one such valuable traits as logic and order.
  • Latin is often described as a “mental workout” and the reason why is because it helps one think holistically while having to pay attention to the minute of syntax, deflections (more on this below), and word formations.
  • Think of Latin as a rigorous workout for your mind, logical, and linguistic abilities.

4. The best way to learn English grammar is through…. wait for it, LATIN.

  • For most, English grammar is challenging to teach and learn because it is abstract on account of a lack of structure.
  • Latin grammar is concrete on account of a logical structure that is easily understood.
  • Latin has inflections - endings - which show the relationship between different “content words” i.e.: nouns, verbs, adjectives etc.
  • Learning the different endings for nouns, verbs, adjectives etc., reveals the role of every word in a sentence. It’s how Latin shows what the subject, object or verb is.

5. Latin is the best preparation for learning any language:

  • While the natural choice is other Latin-based languages like French, Spanish etc., Latin helps with the study of any language.
  • Language learning is fundamentally about the recognition of patterns and how words get stringed together into sentences etc.

6. Latin is the language of the Western Civilization:

  • The language of the Western civilization is Latin, thus it is a significant component of our collective human knowledge and history.
  • While we have benefitted greatly from the Greeks, it was actually the Romans who summarized - in Latin - and interpreted all known knowledge from the Greeks and passed it down to us.
  • Latin provides the root words for all of the modern sciences.
  • The terminology in the disciplines of law, logic, theology, philosophy, and political science is fundamentally Latin or derived from Latin.

7. Latin is the most influential language in human history.

  • Once you really understand how language works, the task of learning a new language will be more than cut in half.
  • Easily learn the following Latin-derived languages in a matter of months:
  • 1. Italian
  • 2. French
  • 3. Spanish
  • 4. Portuguese
  • 5. Romanian
